Layathu Latu, the Indianapolis Colts’ first-round rookie draft pick, is ready to step in to replace Samson Ebukam, who is out for the entire 2024 season after a serious injury.

The 29-year-old defensive end suffered a torn Achilles tendon during practice on Sunday and will miss the entire 2024 season, inevitably impacting the Colts’ defense. As Ebukam had the most sacks of any player on Indy in 2023 with 9.5 sacks. 

While Latu revealed that he was sorry for the injury of Ebukam. A senior player with whom he is close, but he is also looking forward to playing more next season.

‘That’s my big brother,’ Latu said. ‘Before the draft, after the draft, before practices and everything, he helps me a lot. He’s my big brother, he helps me prepare, do moves and stuff like that. I learn from him, watch his film, so I just try to carry on what he gave the team. And I try to add that energy so that I don’t feel like I’m missing anybody. ‘ 

‘He’s in my prayers. I texted him and hoped to see him after (training), but whatever, he’s in my prayers.’ 

Latu, who has struggled with injuries during his college career, added that his approach remains the same despite Eboucam’s serious injury that sidelined him for a long time.

‘Well, I’ll keep doing what I’ve always done,’ Latu said. ‘I’m fighting for a place, trying to prove that I can play in a big team. I’ll keep doing that. Nothing has changed for me.’ 

‘I practice every day like it’s a game snap. It’s just another day with the pads. I’m doing what I do. I think I’m proving every day that I can play with Buck (DeForest Buckner), Cy (Cyree Franklin) and the guys.’
